Meta has officially acquired PlayAI, a startup known for creating lifelike, human-sounding voices with artificial intelligence. The acquisition was confirmed by a Meta spokesperson, as reported by Bloomberg, with the entire PlayAI team expected to join Meta next week.
An internal memo cited by Bloomberg noted that PlayAI’s innovations in natural-sounding voice generation and easy-to-use voice creation tools align well with Meta’s ambitions. The technology will enhance projects like Meta AI, AI Characters, wearables, and audio content creation.
This move is part of Meta’s broader AI expansion. The company has been heavily investing in talent and technology, recently recruiting aggressively from OpenAI and forming a partnership with Scale AI. Notably, Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang joined Meta to lead a team focused on achieving superintelligence.
While the financial terms of the PlayAI deal remain undisclosed, earlier reports had already suggested acquisition talks between the two companies.
